School Closure and Education: Experiences of Teachers and Parents from Maharashtra

This report, a collaboration between Leadership for Equity (LFE) and the government, delves into the educational landscape of Maharashtra during the COVID-19 pandemic. It examines the challenges faced by teachers and parents due to school closures, the shift to remote learning, and the stark digital divide that became apparent.

Key Learnings

This mixed-methods research study, conducted in December 2020, sought to understand the challenges faced by teachers and parents due to school closures and the shift to remote learning. It also aimed to gauge the effectiveness of various educational programs and initiatives implemented during the pandemic. The study employed surveys, focus group discussions (FGDs), and field observations to gather data from six districts in Maharashtra.

The key learnings from the report include:

  1. The pandemic and subsequent school closures severely disrupted the education system in Maharashtra.

  2. The digital divide emerged as a significant barrier to remote learning, with many students and teachers lacking access to devices and reliable internet connectivity.

  3. Teachers faced numerous challenges in adapting to remote teaching methods, including a lack of training and resources, difficulties in engaging students, and concerns about learning loss.

  4. Parents struggled to support their children's education at home, particularly those with limited resources and technological skills.

  5. The closure of schools negatively impacted children's well-being, leading to increased restlessness, inactivity, and learning loss.

  6. There is a pressing need for a multifaceted approach to address the challenges in education, including bridging the digital divide, providing comprehensive training and support to teachers, and prioritizing the well-being of students.
